Britain's National Union of Teachers has apparently disappointed UK government, legitimized Bahraini regime, after it called for the release of two detained union leaders in Bahrain.
Mehdi Issa Mohammed Abu Deeb, chairman of Bahrain's Teachers Association, and his deputy Jalila Mohammed Reza al-Salman were imprisoned last September convicted of inciting hatred of the kingdom's monarchy and organizing education protests.
In a letter to the British embassy in Bahrain, NUT urged the ambassador to attend their hearings and help secure their release. The union's general secretary, Christine Blower, expressed her concerns about their appeals as the Bahraini regime ignored an independent commission into their cases.
The Independent Commission had formerly said that the regime should "drop outstanding charges against them."
Amnesty International said that the rights of the union officials have been breached as there was no evidence proving they "ever advocated violence."
"They appear to have been targeted solely for their leadership of the BTA and for peacefully exercising their rights to freedom of expression, association and assembly. As civilians, they should have not been tried and sentenced by a military court," Amnesty reported.
Blower asked the British diplomats to participate in the appeals and to visit the two prisoners in order to help improve their security.
Abu Deeb, 49, who was arrested in last April, went on a hunger strike last September to demand his release and for all false charges against him to be dropped. Suffering from diabetes and high blood pressure, Abu Deeb was reported to be in critical health condition.
Al-Salman was arrested again last October after released on bail in August due to her health condition. She had gone on hunger strike in protest to her illegal detention and torture, and was hospitalized with chest pain and released days later.
Scores of people have been killed and hundreds more arrested or fired from their jobs since the beginning of the popular uprising in Bahrain in mid-February 2011.
